No one knows exactly when Arachova ( Arahova ) was built, and trying to
trace its origins would take you back to the extreme past.
The historians say that the name is a fact that points to the Slav's as
the first people to occupy this region. This is because the Slav word "Arahova"
means a "place with walnut trees".
In 1847, the then-Mayor C.Papaioannor tried to change the name of Arachova
( Arahova ) to the ancient name of "Anemoria", with a document
that was published in the newspaper "Nea Hellada" ("New Greece"),
and another document sent to the head mayor of Livadia.
During the Byzantine years, the French occupation, and after the Catalan's
occupation, there is no evidence at all to show that Arachova ( Arahova
) even existed. Evidence proving that Arahova did exist and had been inhabited
for many centuries before started after the 3rd century of the Turkish occupation.
The English traveller "Clarce", who referred to the big fire in1803,
made another
reference to the city. He particularly states that the fire was started
by a group of Turks, who he had met, a little time previously at Delphi.
This, however, doesn't explain the reasons why they started the fire, and
there is unfortunately, no other source at all regarding this incident.
The women of Arachova ( Arahova ) are very dedicated and talented workers,
and specialise in the creation of carpets and woven materials. They were
creating their own clothes, and the products that they made became famous
all over Greece.
In 1561 AD, 1500 women were occupied with the manufacture of carpets. The
village of Arachova ( Arahova ) has been able to keep its traditional customs,
and is very famous for this achievement.
The festival of Ai-Giorgi is a very famous and significant one in Arachova
( Arahova ). Ai-Giorgi (Saint George) is the sacred saint and guardian of
Arahova. The walk up to the church from the main street is 265 steps, so
be prepared for a healthy upwards hike.
One of the big bonuses for the economy of Arachova
( Arahova ) is tourism. The near-by ski centre of Parnassos attracts thousands
of visitors every year during the winter season.
There are also other sports and activities besides skiing such as trekking,
cycling, hiking and parasailing from one of the hills, camping in the forest,
and generally other close experiences with the beautiful nature of Parnassos.
