Galaxidi - Parnassos Greece
The region of Galaxidi is a very picturesque and charming place, situated
on the
west side of the Crisaean Gulf. The town of Galaxidi was actually built
on the site of the ancient town of "Oianthi".
Galaxidi is a nautical city, and has a history that dates back over 4000
years. It was during the Liberation War of 1821 that the city reached it's
peak.
During it's history, many invaders tried to conquer Galaxidi. These included
the Franks, Knights of Rhodes and the Catalan. However, the city was never
beaten, and this in itself is testimant to the will and social power of
the people there.
Today Galaxidi is one of the up and coming coastal resorts, as it very popular.
It is a perfectly peaceful place for one to spend a holiday there, relaxing
amongst the beauty and stunnign scenery.
As well as the inspiring natural beauty that surrounds the city, and the
crystal blue waters, it is a city with many places of interest. Some examples
include the church of "Agios Nikolaos", which is home to a stunning
wooden temple.
There are also several museums of interest, such as the Archaeological,
Nautical and Folklore museums, which have some
very impressive artifacts and ancient art on display.
Galaxidi also has some very interesting old traditional buildings and houses,
such as the "Tsalaggira" building, which is today used as the
municipality offices. The "Aggeli" building is in fact now used
as the folklore museum.
There are some interesting churches and monasteries worth visiting as well
in Galaxidi.
For visitors who enjoy the sea, sun and beach, there are some stunning beaches
in the region such as the "Kalafati" beach.
Galaxidi is a very interesting and beautiful region to visit, and has a
good infrastructure for tourism, with a selection of hotels and accommodation,
as well as a great choice of tavernas and restaurants where you can sample
some local cuisine, especially the fresh sea food.
